Roadside Cleanup
Over 110 families participated in our roadside cleanup effort this year.  In the spring, we had no trouble filling a dump truck full of trash from our roadsides. We give our heartfelt thanks to those who over the course of the year participated in keeping our town litter free.

We know that many people not on our mailing list keep their favorite roads and trails picked up. Please consider signing up. This allows us to spread out the assignments in such a way that each road can be covered at least twice a year. When someone is sick or moves away, someone else is available to step in. Whatever and wherever you wish to help, let us know. If you have a new neighbor, mention our cleanup day. Each person can really make a difference.

Part of our success in this effort is that we have a variety of ways you can participate. Some just go to their sections when reminded twice a year, while others walk these sections frequently with a bag in their pocket. Conservation Commission members and friends take on special pick-up projects from time to time as needed. Others keep some extra bags under their car seat, and stop when they notice litter. Together all our combined efforts get the job done.

We have noticed a steady decline of discarded large objects such as tires, metallic objects, appliances and mattresses. Many of these larger items accumulated over several years, but once removed, the areas have remained relatively free of new debris. Also, our trails and Class six roads overall have been staying cleaner. In the past, we would find pickup load accumulations of trash bags in one or more locations. Last year, no large accumulations were reported. Certainly, a few popular recreation areas will always require our attention.

We know that a small percentage of people will leave litter. It is up to the rest of us not to let a few inconsiderate people spoil it for the rest of us.
