FD April Report
The Town of Deering, NH
To:             Deering Board of Selectmen

From:           Chief Andy Anderson

Date:           1 April 2006

Subject:        Monthly Report

This month’s report will cover the period from 1 March to 31 March 2006 inclusive.

The Deering Fire and Rescue responded to 18 calls during the month of March.  Five of these calls were for illegal or unattended outside fires.

With the Spring season upon us we have been receiving many requests for Burning Permits each weekend.  Most of the requests have been for Seasonal Campfire/Cooking Permits.  Brush Permits will only be issued when raining or the day after a substantial rain depending on the Fire Class day and local weather conditions.  Burning Permits are required for all open burning when there is no snow cover.

Vehicle Inspections in March didn’t go as smoothly as we hoped, with substantial repairs needed to Engine Two and Tanker Two.  The Engine required three new batteries (which replaced the seven year old originals) and a new cover for the battery compartment had to be fabricated.  Tanker Two needed work on the brakes.

Lieutenant Chrissy Elliott traveled to the annual Two State Weekend at the National Fire Academy and successfully completed a class on Arson Detection for the First Responder.  The classes, sponsored by the NFA in conjunction with the New Hampshire Fire Academy, are free of charge.

In other training, on March 26th we practiced again with our Vehicle Extrication tools.  This time, with some assistance from the Highway Department, we crushed a vehicle with a “victim” trapped inside.  The exercise went smoothly and the Rescue Randy was out of the pick up truck in thirty minutes.

Deputy Chief Ladue, Captain Connor and I met with Byron Brooks, the KME representative, on March 30th to finalize specifications on the new Engine. I have sent a letter to KME in hopes of getting the Engine onto the assembly line as soon as possible to avoid any further costs.

The new Compressor and SCBA have been ordered and will be invoiced in June for a July payment.  We have also received a quote for the Rescue Boat at a reduced cost compared to the price we received last year.

My thanks to the Selectmen and the Budget Committee for all of their assistance prior to and during Town Meeting - your support is always appreciated.

The Fire and Rescue Call Summary and Apparatus Report for the month of March are attached.

Respectfully Submitted,

Chief Andy Anderson
Deering Fire and Rescue
