FD Monthly Report-March
The Town of Deering, NH
To:             Deering Board of Selectmen

From:           Chief Andy Anderson

Date:           1 March 2006

Subject:        Monthly Report

This month’s report will cover the period from 1 February to 28 February 2006 inclusive.

The Deering Fire and Rescue responded to 27 calls during the month of February, the most ever in a single month period in the history of the Department.

Four promotions took place during the month.  David Warren was promoted to Rescue Lieutenant, a position he has been filling as Acting Lieutenant for nearly a year.  Chrissy Elliot assumed a “Floating” Engine Company Lieutenant’s position.  Jim Tramontozzi and Doug Connor were promoted to the positions of Captain in the Donovan and McAlister Stations respectively.  Lieutenant Warren will continue to respond from the Murdough Station and Lieutenant Elliott will divide her time between the Donovan and McAlister Stations.

We also welcomed a new member to our Department.  Steve Brooks, who grew up in Deering, has joined and will be responding from the Murdough Station.  Firefighter Brooks has extensive training that he received with the United States Coast Guard and with the Baltimore City, Maryland, Fire Department.

Some minor communications changes took place on the 21st.  In taking steps forward to comply with guidelines from the National Incident Management System, Concord Fire Alarm changed radio call signs throughout the Compact.  This helps to achieve the goal of using plain language wherever possible to avoid confusion on all incidents.

Previously, all members assigned a radio designation used the Town’s Designator Number, the alpha designator of “R”, and their call sign number.  For example, Deering’s Town number is 84, so if the Chief called to communicate with Fire Alarm the transmission would be “Eight Four R One”.  Moving to NIMS, the Chief’s number became “Eight Four C One.”  The letter “C” is the abbreviation for Chief, Line Officers (Captains and Lieutenants) are “O” for Officer, and all other members with a radio kept the “R” designation.

The apparatus that used to be identified by “M” (Engine) “K” (Tanker) and “X” (Ambulance) now use plain language to describe the vehicle responding.  For example, if the Engine at the Murdough Station responds to a call, it will now transmit to Fire Alarm as “Eight Four Engine Three.”

The ambulance was out of service from the 13th to the 15th having the body repaired by Scott Gerini.  These repairs were a result of the December collision with Antrim’s Tanker.  Hilltop Heating also paid a visit to the McAlister Station on the 24th to repair the furnace.

Our Awards Luncheon took place on the 25th and was well attended by members of the Department and their families.  We would like to thank Beth Kelly and Dan Donovan who joined us for the presentations and Robin Card and Sandy Warren for preparing the food.  A list of Award Recipients is attached to this report.

On the 28th we held our monthly Training.  Deputy Chief Chris Ladue helped us review the Multi-Gas Meter and Lieutenant Chrissy Elliott instructed us in the signs, symptoms, and treatment for Carbon Monoxide poisoning.

The Fire and Rescue Call Summary and Apparatus Report for the month of February are attached.

Respectfully Submitted,

Chief Andy Anderson
