February Department Report
The Town of Deering, NH
To:             Deering Board of Selectmen

From:           Chief Andy Anderson

Date:           1 February 2008

Subject:        Monthly Report

This month’s report will cover the period from 1 January to 31 January 2008.  The Deering Fire and Rescue responded to 15 calls during the month.

Ambulance One was out of service for a short time to correct a recurring problem with the drop down “On-Spot” chains.  There are some maintenance issues with Tanker Two (clutch, leaking radiator) that will need to be addressed either with State Inspection in March or shortly thereafter.

We performed some renovations at the Murdough Station in an effort to gain some room and to better position some equipment.  We removed the small office and are in the process of rearranging the SCBA Cascade and Compressor System to make more space behind the apparatus.  Our plan is to move the Rescue Boat to the Murdough Station so it is centrally located and still within a short response distance of Deering Lake.  During the same work detail we continued to patch and paint the walls, which has been a work in progress for some time now.

By the end of Winter we would like to have the Murdough Station “spruced up” with our goal to paint the other two stations this year, if funds allow for us to do so.  The Murdough Station now has plastic on the windows to help conserve some heating fuel costs.

We are having problems with the furnaces at all of the stations that required immediate repair.  At Donovan and McAlister the oil burning units were found not running and in house repairs were unsuccessful.  We discovered that the gas furnace at the Murdough Station was emitting dangerously high Carbon Monoxide levels when we were unable to calibrate our multi-gas meter inside the station.  The Town Administrator was notified and repairs have either been made or were in progress at the time of this report.

Two Lieutenant’s openings were posted during the month.  We have been operating short of these two important officers’ positions for over two years and feel that now is the time to fill them.

Lieutenant Chrissy Elliott was granted a thirty day personal Leave of Absence on January 29th.

Our scheduled Weapons of Mass Destruction Awareness training was postponed due to the Budget Hearing.  We participated in Rescue training instead; splinting femur, ankle, and leg injuries.

Four members have completed their two-year Refresher Training Programs and EMT recertification testing.

The Fire and Rescue Call Summary and Apparatus Report for the month of January are attached.

Respectfully Submitted,

Chief Andy Anderson
