September Department Report
The Town of Deering, NH
To:             Deering Board of Selectmen

From:           Chief Andy Anderson

Date:           1 October 2008

Subject:        Monthly Report

This month’s report will cover the period from 1 September to 30 September 2008.  The Deering Fire and Rescue responded to 21calls during the month.

All of the recent maintenance issues with Ambulance One have been resolved.  The rest of the apparatus have been inspected by the Highway Department and all of the vehicles are in presently in service.

During routine weekly checks the Multi-Gas Meter, Holmatro (Jaws of Life) Power Unit, and one of the chainsaws had to be taken out of service and are undergoing repair as of this writing.

We welcomed back Jerry Tramontozzi to the Department during the month.  Firefighter Tramontozzi will be assigned to the same station (Donovan) where his son, Jim, is the Captain.  FF Tramontozzi has two years of previous experience with the Fire and Rescue.

Captain Jim Tramontozzi, Lieutenant Rene Boyer, FF Tim Coombs, FF Rhett Darner, FF Pat Murdough, FF Mark Voorhees, and FF James Wilcoxen are participating in the FFII class that began September 15th in Henniker.

Firefighters Chrissy Elliott and Kris Saunders traveled to the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, MD to take classes during the annual Two-State Weekend for New Hampshire and Vermont which took place September 19-21.

Assistant Chief Chris Ladue attended a Planning Board meeting for the first time on the 10th and will replace Firefighter Don Deschenes as the representative to the Board for the Fire and Rescue.

Training this month was held on September 28th at the Donovan Station.  We practiced laddering the building and the roof and worked with our small engine equipment.

Tanker One received a new Pump & Pump Panel cover fabricated and installed by Concord Awning on the 23rd.  This cover will keep the caps and valves on the pump from freezing when responding in inclement weather during the Winter months and will protect the panel from any road debris we may encounter.

McAlister Station required some fresh paint around the doors and trim boards and the project is nearly finished.

On the 1st we traveled with Engine One to Francestown to take part in their annual Labor Day Parade.

I mistakenly omitted two important items from last month’s report:

Assistant Chief Ladue and I met with the DLIA on August 30th to discuss how residents on Deering Lake could mark their property so we could more easily locate them in an emergency.  We will be spending time this Winter preplanning responses to the Lake area.

On August 31st, 84 Boat One participated in the annual Deering Lake “End of Summer” Boat Parade.

A closing item: on September 3rd we responded to a Brush Fire on top of Little Hedgehog Mountain.  The fire was in a difficult location, requiring a Second Alarm response for manpower and specialized equipment.  With the assistance of our Mutual Aid towns the incident was brought under control and contained to a small area.

I would also like to note that during that call Rick & Diane’s Restaurant in Antrim supplied pizza free of charge to our responders.  Thank you to our Mutual Aid Departments and to Rick & Diane’s for your support!

The Fire and Rescue Call Summary and Apparatus Report for the month of September are attached.

Respectfully Submitted,

Chief Andy Anderson
