Minutes, April 28, 2004
Present: Susan Bartlett, Jean Johnson, Kathy Luger, Polly Pierce, Pia Sunderland, Judy Wood, Bev Yeaple
Members of the Friends of the Deering Library spent the first hour cleaning the Library followed by a meal provided by Judy Wood, Polly Pierce, Pia Sunderland, Jean Johnson and Bev Yeaple.
Judy Wood called the meeting to order and welcomed Polly Pierce, the new Library trustee.
Summer Hours for the Library, starting after Memorial Day, will be:
Mondays from 1:00 to 3:00 pm
Wednesdays from 10:00 to 12:00 pm
Thursdays from 3:00 to 7:00 pm
Saturdays from 10:00 to noon
Plans for a Book Sale were discussed. It was decided to hold the sale some time during the summer.
Summer activities for young people:
Story Hour on Wednesday mornings will start after Memorial Day. It is hoped that the Friends of Deering will continue to offer this program.
Polly Pierce and Kathy Luger will take responsibility for planning a summer reading program for young people, using some of the state resources if possible.
Judy Wood will get the school summer reading lists. Jean Johnson will try to obtain the books on the lists for the Library.
The Friends enthusiastically endorsed the Conversations on the Porch program and hope they will continue this summer.
The Friends hope to offer special services to Deering residents including providing large type books, “Talking Books” (books on tape), bringing books to people who cannot get to the Library and reading to people.
Judy Wood reported on her Bookmobile to Longwood Park, taking books for young people on Wednesday afternoons at 6:30. The Friends enthusiastically support her efforts and hope to be able to help her expand the program.
Jean Johnson reported that the owner of Longwood Park is willing to donate the used mobile home to the Friends if they will move it from the park. He seemed unwilling to consider letting the Town have a Mobile Home without charge at the Park that provided services such as the Library to residents of the Park.
The Friends will compile a “Wish List” of possible books that the Library would like donated.
The next meeting of the Friends of the Deering Library is scheduled for Thursday, May 27th, at 7:00 pm in the Library.
