Deering Police Cadet Post #612 Place in State Competition
The Deering Police Department, who sponsor the Hillcat Law Enforcement Explorer Post #612, are pleased to announce that several members of Post #612 participated in the 12th Annual NH Police Cadet Challenge Weekend. This competition was held at the Hidden Valley Scout Reservation in Gilmanton Iron Works on the weekend of May 9th through 11th. The team from Hillcat Police Cadet Post #612 garnered 5th Place overall in the standings, with a 1st Place win in Use of Force Decision Making Skills. The Post #612 Team also placed 4th and 5th in several other competition areas.
This annual competition pits 3 or 4 person teams of Police Cadets against each other in scored competitions. Areas of competition include Motor Vehicle Stops, Unknown Call Response, Building Searches, Cruiser Push, First Aid, Firearms, Obstacle Course, Use-of-Force Decisions, Evidence Collection, Drill & Ceremony, and more. Chief James Pushee, who is the Head Advisor and founded the Hillcat Police Cadet Post #612 with the help of Ofc. Nicholas Hodgen in the fall of 2006, sponsored the “Use of Force Decision Making Skills” portion of this state competition. Chief Pushee has been involved with and sponsored various competition areas every year since 1996, when he was the Advisor to the Enfield (NH) Police Cadets.
The Hillcat Post #612 are currently looking forward to some other upcoming events. These include assisting with the Town of Deering Public Safety Day scheduled for the morning of Saturday June 7th, as well as the 3rd Annual Hillsboro Youth Bicycle Race, scheduled for the morning of Saturday June 14th. On June 21st, more than half of the members of Deering’s Hillcat Cadet Post #612 will head off to participate in the annual Police Cadet Academy at Hesser College in Manchester, for a full week of intensive, paramilitary style law enforcement and public safety training.
The Hillcat Police Cadet Post #612 is still actively seeking new members. We can accept as members both boys and girls who are at least 14 ½ years old (and not yet 21 years old) and have graduated the 8th Grade. Meetings are held (usually) every other week, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM on Tuesdays, at the Deering Town Hall. Members also participate in various Public Service/Community Service events throughout the year. Anyone with an interest in learning about Law Enforcement and Public Safety Services should contact Chief James Pushee or Officer Chris Parsons at the Deering Police Department offices (464-3127).
Finally, we would like to remind everyone that this program is a non-profit program with very minimal public funding. As such, we rely heavily on the generosity of private citizens and businesses to fund all of our programs and events. Any donations we receive will assist us with purchasing uniforms and safety equipment, training equipment, required annual re-chartering and programming fees, entrance fees for events such as the Challenge Weekend and the Cadet Academy, as well as any costs for special training events and tours. Any donations to help support this youth program would be greatly appreciated.
