Moose Plate Grant Awarded to Deering Public Library

DEERING HISTORIC SCHOOLHOUSE/LIBRARY RECEIVES $9,961 MOOSE PLATE GRANT TO IMPROVE BUILDING ACCESS

January 11, 2022

The Town of Deering recently accepted a $9,961 grant from the New Hampshire Division of Historical Resources, Department of Natural & Cultural Resources, to create a pathway from the Deering Town Hall parking lot to the historic District 1 schoolhouse.

These funds will allow for ample parking and safe access to the schoolhouse, which is currently maintained as part of the Deering Public Library.  This access will allow the public to enjoy programs and services of the library while learning about the history and use of the 1810 District 1 schoolhouse.  The schoolhouse was added to the New Hampshire Registry of Historic Places in 2020.

This project was made possible through funds received from the sale of the New Hampshire Moose Conservation License Plate and administered by the Division of Historical Resources, Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.

In announcing the grant award, Library Trustees noted,

“In 2024, the town will be celebrating its 250th anniversary and as part of that celebration, it is our goal to highlight the importance of our historic heritage.  The improved public access that this walkway will provide to the schoolhouse building will allow for its use for town programs, and as a volunteer-run library, benefiting all Deering residents. This will be an exciting step forward to increase use of the building as other renovation projects are also completed.”
